In the wake of the Sharra Rebellion, Lew Alton returns to Darkover and discovers the Sharra Matrix is still intact. Lew and his friends race to find the Matrix and destroy it, but for that, they’ll need the Sword of Aldones. The Sword and the Matrix are both wrapped up in secrets and riddles, and while both sides vie for possession of the weapons, betrayals mount.
